St. Benedicts (NJ) continues to roll early on this season they defeated South Atlanta (GA) on Friday night 57 to 43.
On the night after his huge triple-double, Derrick Favors found himself going up against a huge front-line for St. Benedicts. He got into early foul trouble and never real seemed to get into the flow of the game.
Samardo Samuels had a big night playing on a bad ankle he was still able to get 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Greg Echenique (2009) finished with 16 points and played some tough defense against Favors. Tamir Jackson continued his steady play since the Oak Hill game finishing the night with 16 points.
Kemba Walker (PG) - Rice (NY) - Uconn - Class of 2008
Kemba Walker is an extremely talented lead guard who is able to take over a game in many different aspects. He has excellent court vision and can also be a big time scoring guard when needed. Game 5 - Helen Cox (LA) vs. New Hope (MS) 75 to 62
This was the match up everyone had been waiting to see all day long. It was a matchup of a well known player in Greg Monroe (Helen Cox, LA) and a player trying to make a name for himself in Rashanti Harris (New Hope, MS).
Everyone in the gym was wondering which Greg Monroe would show up for this game. He is considered by some scouting services the # 1 player in the class of 2008, but in the opening game of the tournament he was a non factor scoring just 7 points of which 6 came in the first 5 minutes of the game. He also had 6 rebounds in that game.
People also wondered what type of game Rashanti Harris would have after a late night OT victory over American Heritage, FL would he be able to perform at that high of level and dominate.
Well everyone got a chance to see one of the best match ups of the year with each player living up to the hype and delivering a monster performance.
In the early going you could tell that Greg Monroe was here to play tonight with his intensity and demanding of the ball in the post where he scored his team’s first 6 points. He played hard diving on the ground for loose balls. He had a couple of moves in the 1st half that made everyone realize how special a player he can be when he wants to.
Rashanti Harris scored a few early buckets in the game totaling 6 points for the half. He did most of his damage in the 2nd half.
The 1st half was led by Helen Cox who used the inspired play of Greg Monroe to take a 34 to 26 lead into the half. He finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds in the 1st half. Dale Hughes led all scorers in the half with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
In the 2nd half Harris began to insert himself more on the offensive end scoring with an array of moves on the inside. He started to use his big frame to dominate on the boards. Harris and Monroe took the game over in the 2nd half with each other both trading basket for basket and matching whatever the other did.
Helen Cox kept their lead through the 3rd quarter the score going into the 4th quarter was 56 to 44. The 4th quarter was much of the same with Helen Cox staying strong with their lead and getting Greg Monroe the ball.
The standouts in the game were Greg Monroe (Helen Cox, LA) who put on a great performance showing people why he is a legit top 5 player in the class. He finished with a game high 30 points on 13-23 shooting, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Rashanti Harris (New Hope, MS) was the other standout who showed that his jaw dropping performance from the night before was not a fluke. He really stepped it up in the 2nd half after a slow 1st half to finish with 28 points on 10-13 shooting and 12 rebounds.
Helen Cox also received a nice game from Taj Givens who pitched in 20 points on 9-12 shooting and 9 rebounds. New Hope got a solid performance from Dale Hughes who had 18 points on 5-22 shooting and 7 rebounds.
