DeMarcus Cousins (LeFlore, AL) gave an update on his recruitment at the 2009 Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, MA.

Memphis and Coach John Calipari now are the leader for his services, after he re-opened his recruitment since UAB would not give a written agreement letting him out of his letter of intent if Coach Mike Davis was no longer at the university.

Other schools that have been named by Cousins to receive an official visit in the spring include Kansas State and N.C. State. He also listed Wake Forest and Virginia Tech as schools of interest.

UAB is completely eliminated from his list of schools regardless if Coach Mike Davis is there next year. Cousins said “UAB is out of the picture, but I’m still down with Mike Davis,” he said. “It’s a bad situation down there, and nothing is going to change. Even if Coach Davis is there, I’m not going there.”

He helped lead his team to a 67-54 victory over Lincoln, NY at the Spalding Hoophall Classic on Monday afternoon. He finished the game with 17 points, 20 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 2 assist and 3 turnovers.

Derrick Favors

On Wednesday, Derrick Favors a 6’9/225 power forward from (South Atlanta, GA) announced he will be attending Georgia Tech. He picked the Yellow Jackets over N.C. State and Georgia.

Derrick Favors who is a consensus top five prospect will be a impact player for Georgia Tech next season in the ACC. Coach Paul Hewitt now has very impressive incoming class for next year.

Derrick Favors joins Mfon Udofia (Miller Grove, GA), Brian Oliver (William Penn, DE), Glen Rice JR. (Walton, GA) and Kammeon Holsey (Hancock Central, GA) for the recruiting class of 2009.

Derrick Favors is a prospect with a high upside to his game. He has the ability to finish on the inside with either hand along with being a great rebounder on both ends of the floor. He runs the floor very well for a player his size and is capable of stepping outside and knocking down the jumper if you double team him. He is very active on the inside on both ends of the floor being able to alter or block any shot put up by his opponents on the inside. He has a motor that never stops and has started to add even more range on his jumper stepping out and knocking down the 3 more consistently.

Derrick Favors is considered by some publications as the #1 player in the class of 2009, he is a beast on the inside and has a ton of upside. He has the ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. On the offensive end he uses an array of post moves along with power on the inside. He rebounds well on both ends of the floor aggressively crashing the boards. On the defensive end he alters many shots along with swatting any in his reach well using his quick feet to close out on perimeter shots.

Derrick Favors

Derrick Favors

A few days ago I had the opportunity to catch up with Derrick Favors ’09 of South Atlanta (GA), arguably America’s best player. The gifted 6’9 center is the most dominant low post player in the country and has a good shot at winning some National Player of the Year awards this season. Favors, who I listed as the fourth best performer at the 2008 Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic, has been progressively cutting his college list down over the past few months. When I interviewed Derrick at the Elite 24 event, he had a list of 10 schools he was still considering. When I caught up with him again in early October, Favors informed me that he was down to five schools, having cut his list in half. By late November, that number had been trimmed down to four, as Florida State was no longer under consideration. Well, Derrick has chopped another team off his once extensive list of college options, and this time it is Memphis. When I got in touch with Favors recently, he let me know via text message that he was down to Georgia Tech, Georgia, and North Carolina State. The big man said that he had no favorites, stating, “they [are] all the same.” I went on to ask Favors what the main factors in his decision would be: “Being able to play in front of my friends and family.” He did say that this does not give the Peach State schools a leg up on NC State though. Derrick, who I project as a 2009 McDonald’s All-American, has been slotted to select Georgia Tech every time I have done projections for him (late August, early October, and mid-November), with UGA listed as second in line every time. I still think that Derrick Favors will end up playing for Paul Hewitt as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket.

John Wall (Word of God Christian Academy, NC) Sets-Up Visits

John Wall the # 1 (PG) in the country has just finished up a very successful summer on the AAU circuit and has now decided to focus on recruiting setting up his official visits.

In the next couple of weeks he will visit Memphis, Kansas and Oregon on official visits with Kentucky and Baylor to setup dates in the near future. There are also a few schools who will receive un-official visits from Wall, which include N.C. State and Oklahoma State.

According to Wall’s travel team coach Brian Clifton of D-One Sports, a Sept. 12 official visit to Memphis is first on the docket followed by a Sept. 19 trip to Kansas. Then Wall will travel to Oregon on Oct. 3 and likely will be at Kentucky one week later. A date has not yet been set for the final official visit to Baylor.

After Baylor went out and hired Dwon Clifton the brother of Brian Clifton and AAU coach of John Wall everyone assumed that a verbal commitment to Baylor would follow quickly after. That has not been the case in the weeks after the hire. Only time will tell where he will end up playing his college basketball next season.
