Primetime Shootout @ Rutgers (RAC) Recap

Well I am on the road again this weekend to cover the second weekend of Primetime Shootout in New Jersey. I headed up Friday afternoon to watch 3 headline match-ups at the Lewis Brown Arena (RAC) on Rutgers University campus.

The group from Primetime Shootout had four nationally ranked teams at this event with # 1 St. Anthony’s, # 3 St. Benedict’s, # 11 Oak Hill and # 13 St. Patrick. The big match-up of the night was St. Benedict’s vs. St. Patrick in the final game. These two teams our both national powers and rivals in New Jersey.

The individual standouts on the night were Mike Rosario (Rutgers, St. Anthony’s, NJ) who had 32 points in 20 minutes on his future court. Brandon Jennings (Arizona, Oak Hill, VA) who finished with 35 points and 9 assists. Dexter Strickland (UNC, St. Patrick, NJ) who totaled 32 points in 3 quarters of action, Samardo Samuels (Louisville, St. Benedict’s, NJ) dominated on the inside for 30 points and 7 rebounds. Theses star players all stepped up big for their schools on the big stage tonight.

Recap of each game

Game 1 – St. Anthony’s (NJ) vs. John Caroll (MD) Final 71 to 33

This game was over before it even got started with St. Anthony’s jumping on John Carroll in the first 5 minutes to blow the game wide open starting out on a 19-0 run. They finished the first quarter up 21 to 6 with John Carroll scoring their first bucket with 3:25 minutes left in the quarter.

The John Carroll guards really struggled to bring the ball up against the pressure installed by St. Anthony’s in the 1st half. This helped St. Anthony’s continue to push their lead to 50 to 16 at the end of the 1st half. They were led by standout guard Mike Rosario who had 24 points in the half on an array of 3 pointers and strong finishes on the inside.

The 2nd half started just like the first with Rosario coming out still on fire scoring 8 points in the 3rd quarter before heading to the bench for the final quarter. St. Anthony’s took a 63 to 23 lead into the 4th quarter. They cleared the bench for the final quarter cruising to an easy victory. Tyshawn Taylor (Marquette) added 11 points to go along with Mike Rasario game high 32 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. John Carroll was led by junior Isaiah Philmore who had 6 points and 5 rebounds, he really struggled tonight. Other players who contributed for John Carroll were juniors Erick Smith with 7 points and Ryan McQuaid with 6 points.

Game 2 – Oak Hill Academy (VA) vs. Piscataway (NJ) Final 81 to 39

Oak Hill started fast in this game with a 12 to 3 lead in the first 3:00 minutes led by Brandon Jennings (Arizona) and Danny Jennings who combined for 8 of the 12 points. Oak Hill opened their lead up to 20 to 7 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Piscataway turned up their defensive pressure playing very tough and physical defense on Brandon Jennings to start out. They also started to put some points on the board going back and forth with Oak Hill cutting the lead to 26 to 14. Then Brandon Jennings began to insert himself helping Oak Hill push their lead to 39 to 16 going into halftime. The leaders in the first half were Brandon Jennings with 10 points and Bryon Allen also added 10 points to go along with 8 points from Danny Jennings. Piscataway got 7 points from Aaron Hush and 6 points from sophomore Malcolm Griggs.

Oak Hill came out in the 2nd half and opened with a 15 to 4 run to end any chances of Piscataway coming back. They took a 58 to 23 lead into the 4th quarter before Coach Smith cleared the bench. In the 4th quarter Oak Hill continued dominate finishing with an easy 81 to 39 win. Brandon Jennings finished with a game high 35 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds. He got solid support from Danny Jennings 15 points and 6 rebounds and Bryon Allen 12 points. Piscataway got a solid game from senior John Griggs who totaled 19 points and junior Aaron Hush with 10 points in defeat.

Game 3 – St. Benedict’s (NJ) vs. St. Patrick (NJ) Final 68 to 62

This was the match-up everyone was waiting to see and it definitely lived up to the hype. Each team went back and forth at each other with the game coming down to the final minutes to decide who would take the victory. There was a tremendous amount of Division 1 talent across each of these teams’ rosters and it definitely showed.

The game started out at little slow with each team feeling each other out. Dexter Strickland (UNC) did not play in the first quarter for St. Patrick. St. Patrick led 14 to 7 in the first couple of minutes but St. Benedict’s came back strong going inside where they had the advantage to cut the lead to 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Dexter Strickland came in at the beginning of the 2nd quarter and didn’t disappoint starting out fast scoring a quick couple of buckets. Samardo Samuels started to really do work on the inside scoring 6 points on a 11 to 3 run which gave the Gray Bee’s a 24 to 19 lead. Dexter Strickland came back to cut the lead to 28-26 going into the half.

In the second half started with St. Pat’s tying the game up at 29 apiece. Then the Gray Bee’s went on a run to open the lead to 40 to 29. St. Pat’s fought back to make the score 40 to 32 before St. Benedict’s went on another short run ending the 3rd quarter with 47 to 38 lead going into the 4th quarter.

In the 4th quarter Dexter Strickland lead his team all the way back to cut the lead to 64 to 62 with 43 seconds left scoring 8 straight points. In the end the Gray Bee’s were able to seal the victory hitting some big free throws. Earning them a hard fought victory 68 to 62 over cross town rival. The standout players were Dexter Strickland with a game high 32 points and 4 rebounds in 3 quarters of play. Samardo Samuels had another monster game with 30 points and 7 rebounds and received help from junior Greg Echenique who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
